Key West is a very special place known for being the Southernmost Point in the continental US and for its eccentric residents. The island lies close to the third largest barrier reef in the world, making it a prime destination for scuba divers and snorkeling. It’s not just the breathtaking sunsets or the historic beauty on every corner, Key West has an expanding arts community, award winning restaurants, active boating community and a relaxing lifestyle that makes it alluring to all. Those who visit this tropical oasis are quite often drawn to return, sometimes becoming Key West’s newest homeowners.

Beginnings

The first homes in this section of Florida were built in the Old Town back in 1886. This particular town had many homes that included a wood frame to keep them off the ground, so they didn’t flood. Peaked metal roofs and enclosed porches were also popular. Other sections became established through the years such as New Town.

What Homes Are Like Today

Bright is one word that describes many of the homes in the Key West area. From bright pink hues to bold blue tones, houses in the region definitely stand out. Many are inspired by nature; pale salmon pink, sandy tan shades and cerulean blue are commonly used. The Victorian gingerbread architecture is still displayed on homes, including hand-carved lattice and decorative porch brackets. Houses are designed for function/comfort as well as for style. A prime example is the homes with louvered shutters that protect against the heat and encourage air circulation inside the house. White picket fence are very common and give a pop of vibrant white to the brilliantly colored homes. You can have white picket fence people dream of!
